GFU’s Jenny Milton an All-NWC Softball Pick

May 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Jenny Milton, a freshman from Centralia, was named to the All-Northwest Conference softball second-team, as a second baseman, on Tuesday.

Milton, playing for George Fox University, led her team with a .333 batting average and was one of three GFU players on the All-NWC second team.

Jet’aime Mullins, a junior outfielder for Lewis & Clark who graduated from White Pass, was an All-NWC Honorable Mention.

Here’s the release from the school:

“NEWBERG, Ore. – An unexpected fourth-place finish in the Northwest Conference and their first post-season action in 18 years has earned several members of George Fox University’s softball team recognition on the 2012 All-NWC Teams as voted on by the league’s eight coaches, including Coach of the Year honors for Bruins head coach Jessica Hollen.

Second baseman Jenny Milton, center fielder Kris Trindle, and starting pitcher Allyssa DenDekker were named to the All-NWC Second Team, while first baseman Kerrianne Davidson received All-NWC honorable mention.  It was the first All-Conference accolades for all of them.

Hollen, who was picked to rebuild the Bruins’ struggling program in the summer of 2008, saw her efforts begin to bear fruit this spring as she led a young team with no seniors to a 20-22 overall record , giving her a four-year career count of 50-109.   It was the Bruins’ best record since the 2001 team went 16-14-1, and their 20 wins was the second-most in team history to the 1994 team’s 21-8.

George Fox was picked to finish sixth in the conference in the pre-season coaches’ poll, but surprised the league with a 15-13 record than earned them the fourth and final berth in the NWC Tournament.  Although they dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 1-ranked Linfield College and were eliminated 5-1 by Willamette University in the next game, the Bruins could point to their first post-season tournament since the 1994 team won both the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges and NAIA District 2 titles as positive signs that the program is on the right track.

This is the first Coach of the Year award for Hollen, who began her coaching career as an assistant at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore., in 1994, coaching the Stayton (Ore.) High School team from 1995-96, and was co-head coach at Chemeketa in 1997.  During her playing days, she was a Junior College All-American at Chemeketa in 2003.  ]

Milton, a freshman from Centralia, Wash., led the Bruins with a .333 batting average, 141 at bats, and 47 hits while ranking second in doubles (8), tying for second in stolen bases (12) and sacrifices (3), and placing third in triples (3) and walks (12).  The left-swinging infielder also scored 21 runs, drove in 17, hit one home run, and sported a fine .981 fielding average with only three errors all season. In conference statistics, she ranked 4th in triples, 9th in hits, 10th in doubles, 11th in stolen bases and total bases (64), 16th in batting average, and 25th in slugging percentage. She was particularly effective against NWC opponents, batting a team-high .379 with 36 hits, 17 runs, a .429 on base percentage, and a .526 slugging percentage.

During the season, Milton had 14 multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 game with a double, triple, two steals and three RBIs at Puget Sound.  She also had three hits with a double, triple, and two RBIs vs. Northwest Christian, and a three-hit game with two doubles, two steals, two runs and two RBIs vs. Willamette.

Trindle, a left-hitting sophomore from Portland, Ore., led the Bruins with 25 runs scored and 10 stolen bases, tied for the lead in triples (4), was second in at bats (139), tied for second in sacrifices (3), and was third in batting average (.295) and hits (41).  She fielded .984 with only one error in center all spring.  In conference statistics, she ranked 2nd in triples, 5th in stolen bases, 13th in hits, 16th in runs, and 26th in batting.  Against NWC competition, she batted .313 while leading the team in at bats (96) and stolen bases (10) and tying for the tops in runs (17).

During the season, Trindle had 12 multi-hit games, collecting three hits with two steals, two runs and an RBI at Puget Sound, and three hits in a game at Lewis & Clark.  She scored two runs in eight different games, and had three multi-steal games.

DenDekker, a sophomore right-hander from Upland, Calif., tied for the team lead in starts (15) and wins while posting a 7-7 record, leading the Bruins with a 3.11 earned run average, and recording three complete games, 28 strikeouts and 33 walks in 72.0 innings.  In conference statistics, she ranked 8th in ERA and wins, 9th in starts, 11th in games (22), 12th in complete games, 14th in innings, and 17th in strikeouts.  She sizzled against the conference, going 5-2 with a 1.27 ERA, striking out 22 in 49.2 innings, and holding league opponents to a meager .231 batting average.

DenDekker was the winning pitcher in the Bruins’ 3-1 upset of 7th-ranked Pacific Lutheran as she allowed one run in 4.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.  She allowed only five hits and one earned run in a 3-2 complete-game loss to PLU as well.  She threw 4.0 shutout innings in a 10-0 win at Lewis & Clark, and fanned four with no earned runs allowed in 6.2 innings to beat Pacific 3-1.  She struck out a season-high five in the Bruins’ 5-4 playoff-clinching win over Whitworth, throwing a four-hitter, then fired a three-hitter to beat the Pirates 3-1 in the regular season finale, with three K’s and no earned runs allowed.

Davidson, a junior righty from Puyallup, Wash., batted .290 with team highs in home runs (4), runs batted in (24), and sacrifices (4). She also collected five doubles among her 29 hits, giving her the second-highest slugging percentage on the team of .460, with 11 runs scored and 10 walks.  In conference statistics, she ranked 16th in home runs, 17th in RBIs, 24th in slugging percentage, and 30th in batting.  She hit all four of her home runs in conference play while batting .338, with four doubles and team highs of 21 RBIs and a .554 slugging percentage.

During the season, Davidson had eight multi-hit games and seven with multiple RBIs.  She went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs at Puget Sound, and 3-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs vs. Pacific.  In a 10-0 win at Lewis & Clark, she slugged her second career grand slam and drove in five runs.  She hit a two-run homer in the Bruins’ 5-4 win over Whitworth that clinched a berth in the NWC Tournament, and hit a game-winning three-run homer in a 3-1 win over Whitworth to close the regular season.”
