Here’s the release from the school:
“NEWBERG, Ore. – An unexpected fourth-place finish in the Northwest Conference and their first post-season action in 18 years has earned several members of George Fox University’s softball team recognition on the 2012 All-NWC Teams as voted on by the league’s eight coaches, including Coach of the Year honors for Bruins head coach Jessica Hollen.
Second baseman Jenny Milton, center fielder Kris Trindle, and starting pitcher Allyssa DenDekker were named to the All-NWC Second Team, while first baseman Kerrianne Davidson received All-NWC honorable mention. It was the first All-Conference accolades for all of them.
Hollen, who was picked to rebuild the Bruins’ struggling program in the summer of 2008, saw her efforts begin to bear fruit this spring as she led a young team with no seniors to a 20-22 overall record , giving her a four-year career count of 50-109. It was the Bruins’ best record since the 2001 team went 16-14-1, and their 20 wins was the second-most in team history to the 1994 team’s 21-8.
George Fox was picked to finish sixth in the conference in the pre-season coaches’ poll, but surprised the league with a 15-13 record than earned them the fourth and final berth in the NWC Tournament. Although they dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 1-ranked Linfield College and were eliminated 5-1 by Willamette University in the next game, the Bruins could point to their first post-season tournament since the 1994 team won both the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges and NAIA District 2 titles as positive signs that the program is on the right track.
This is the first Coach of the Year award for Hollen, who began her coaching career as an assistant at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore., in 1994, coaching the Stayton (Ore.) High School team from 1995-96, and was co-head coach at Chemeketa in 1997. During her playing days, she was a Junior College All-American at Chemeketa in 2003. ]
